Sasa Trail

Day1:

Groundsel

Begin of Trek to Wagagai Peak

Leave Kampala after break fast with a stop over in Jinja to visit the source of the river Nile. We then continue to Mbale town for lunch, dinner and overnight.

Day 2:

Leave Mbale town after breakfast, for Budadiri 30kms in time for briefing. We shall then be assigned porters and ranger guides. Our trek starts from the Sasa trail at Budadiri gate 1250m. We walk through settlements and cultivated farmlands leading to the very steep Mudangi cliff, which also marks the beginning of montane forests. While in this forest, we shall be able to spot black and white Colobus monkeys and baboons. After the Mudangi cliffs, the path is not very steep while the forest thins out lead to a bamboo belt.
Lunch shall along the way, dinner and overnight at Sasa river camp 2900m. total distance covered is 11kms and time taken 4-5 hours.

Day 3:

After breakfast leave Sasa camp ascending to Sasa rangers patrol hut 3300m where we sign the visitors book. We ascend further to Mude camp 3500m. along the way if lucky we shall spot the elusive leopard, hyenas, bushbucks and many other animals.
Mude is a heath land. The distance between Sasa camp and Mude is 5kms and takes about 3 hours.
Lunch will be along the way while dinner and over night at Mude camp.

Day 4:

We begin our hike after breakfast ascending for 9kms and triumphantly making it to Wagagai peak 4321m. This is also the highest peak on mount Elgon. Wagagai peak is moorland. We shall easily spot bush duikers, very many bird species, and rabbits. After a brief rest, we descend Wagagai to Jackson’s summit 4165m. Then to the beautiful Jackson’s pool 4050m. We shall be able to see one of the world’s largest calderas. We continue descending till Mude cave camp for dinned and overnight, covering a distance of 18kms in about 6 hours.

Day 5:

On this day we shall descend for about 5-6 hours passing via Sasa river camp and back to Budadiri gate where we shall be transported to Sipi falls resort for lunch. We shall then take a walk to see the romantic Sipi falls and the spectacular scenery.

Day 6:

After breakfast drive back to Kampala or Entebbe airport with a stop over for lunch in Jinja.
